These are the days of our lives. Our posts are intended to record and convey the experiences we are so lucky to be enjoying. The photos will hopefully make up where the posts fall short. As with all things, expect little and you may be pleasantly surprised!!

Exploring Singapore (cont.)

Thursday 23rd April 2009

After our Singapore Sling in the Long Bar at Raffles we had a browse around the locality which is known as the Colonial Core. We visited Chijmes, which was once a holy convent. It is called Chijmes because it was the convent of the holy infant Jesus and women's refuge and orphanage. Nowadays it is a series of shops, bars, restaurants and gallery spaces.

It was very hot and very humid during the afternoon and everyone was waiting in the shady areas before crossing the road at the lights! We made our way back to Raffles just in time for High Tea!!

Suitably refreshed, we then made our way back to Orchard Road.

In the 1840s Orchard Road was a sleepy 2.5km stretch of dirt road crossed by a railway, dotted with burial grounds and lined with orchards, nutmeg plantations and the occasional home.
Today, it is Singapore's most famous shopping street.

Orchard Road is lined with numerous shopping malls selling designer goods from around the world. They even have a Marks & Spencers!!!!
We walked the length of Orchard Road admiring the sheer size of the malls - one in particular caught our eye; C K Tang - under a green and red tiled Chinese roof and columns, C K Tang touts itself as Singapore's "Harrods", offering everything from rice cookers and cosmetics to specialist chinese foods.
