Our second walking tour was Telegraph Hill and Coit Tower. We made it up the steep hill to start the tour and were shown some of the oldest houses in the city which survived the Earthquake of 1906.
The roads are extremely steep, and in most areas, cars cannot access the hill. Steps are used to access the houses.
Houses range from Stevedore houses, men who worked on the ships, loading and unloading
These were the poorer residence of the area, to mansions of merchants. This house was used in the film 'Dark Passages' Humphrey Bogart & Loren Becall.
This is the 2nd oldest house in San Francisco. These houses were lived in by the poorer community in the 1900's but now are some of the most expensive real estate in the City.
On Telegraph Hill is Coit Tower, which is a prominent landmark seen all over the City. It was dedicated to the San Francisco fire department, which, when first set up, was manned by volunteers. Due to the Earthquakes and the wooden houses, the City burnt down several times and was in constant danger of fires.
The tower resembles a fire hose a bit, but this is coincidental. The tower is named after a lady who was saved by the fire brigade when she was young, her friends perished in the fire. As she was growing up she became a follower of the organisation, helping them wherever she could, and when she died, she left a considerable amount of her estate to the service.

Lillie Coit
We fell in love with Lillie, She was a fiesty lady who liked to smoke cigars, wear trousers and gamble with the men in the saloons. She is our mascot of San Francisco!
