

Northern Cardinal


The origin of Hawai'i's native bird species is intimately tied to the origin of the island chain, itself. Lying nearly 2,400 miles from the nearest continental land mass, Hawai'i's volcanoes emerged from the ocean devoid of plant and animal life.

The ancestors of Hawai'i's native flora and fauna crossed the wide ocean barrier from all directions.
